Dreamin' Wild, directed by Bill Pohlad (Love and Mercy), is a heartfelt and critically acclaimed film that explores the long road to success and the unexpected twists life can take. Set for its UK debut this April from 101 Films, the movie features an outstanding ensemble cast, including Casey Affleck (Manchester By the Sea), Walton Goggins (The White Lotus), Noah Jupe (A Quiet Place), Zooey Deschanel (New Girl), and Jack Dylan Grazer (Shazam!).
The film is based on Steven Kurutz's article Fruitland and tells the poignant true story of the Emerson family. Growing up in rural Washington during the 1970s, Donnie Emerson dreamed of becoming a successful singer-songwriter. Alongside his brother Joe, Donnie formed a band and worked tirelessly to create an album. Despite their passion and determination, financial struggles and disappointment led to the unraveling of their family.
However, what seemed like a broken dream took an unexpected turn nearly three decades later when Donnie received a phone call that would change everything. At nearly 50 years old, Donnie's childhood dream was suddenly within reach. But as the promise of a second chance loomed, it brought with it long-buried emotions, unresolved guilt, and the challenge of reconciling past disappointments. The Emerson brothers, now older and wiser, must navigate the complexities of fame, family, and redemption.
Affleck and Goggins deliver powerful performances as the adult Donnie and Joe, respectively, while Jupe and Grazer portray the brothers in their younger years. Together, they bring the emotional journey from obscurity to unexpected stardom to life. The film shines a light on the deeply personal impact that music can have on a person's life, serving as both a source of joy and heartbreak.
Dreamin' Wild is more than just a music biopic, it's an intimate exploration of family, responsibility, and the price of pursuing a dream. As the story unfolds, it reveals that sometimes, even when dreams come true, they come with a cost.
The film has garnered praise for its sensitive portrayal of the Emerson family's journey, with critics noting its authenticity and emotional depth. Time Magazine describes it as "a rich and often deeply moving meditation on what music can mean in a life." What She Said highlights the "finely tuned, authentic and intimate" performances, while Decider praises the film for forgoing the usual biopic formula and instead focusing on the lasting impact of music. Flick Direct recommends Dreamin' Wild for those seeking a feel-good film with great music and exceptional acting.
