Review by Jon Donnis
Scott Derrickson's The Gorge is an ambitious blend of science fiction, horror, action, and romance that thrives on the chemistry between its two leads, Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy. While its central mystery is intriguing, the real heart of the film lies in the evolving relationship between its protagonists, making for a gripping experience once it finds its footing.
The story follows Levi and Drasa, two elite snipers stationed in opposing guard towers, tasked with ensuring that the horrors within a vast, classified gorge never escape. Isolated from the world and each other, they form an unlikely bond through written messages and small acts of defiance against their bleak circumstances. Their connection grows stronger as they face the terrifying reality of the creatures trapped below, forcing them into a desperate fight for survival.
Taylor-Joy and Teller deliver standout performances, elevating what could have been a straightforward action-horror film into something more emotionally resonant. Their chemistry is undeniable, and their evolving relationship becomes the film's driving force. Derrickson manages to balance heart-pounding action with intimate character moments, creating a compelling mix of spectacle and emotion. Once the second act begins, the pace ramps up significantly, delivering tense battles and high-stakes drama.
However, The Gorge is not without flaws. The first act feels unnecessarily drawn out, delaying the real story by nearly 30 minutes. Had the film trimmed this section down or omitted it altogether, it would have felt much tighter. At over two hours, it risks overstaying its welcome, though the latter half is strong enough to make up for its sluggish opening.
Ultimately, The Gorge succeeds as an engaging sci-fi thriller with a strong emotional core. The horror elements may take a backseat to the romance, but that's not a bad thing when the central relationship is this compelling. If you can power through the slow start, what follows is a thrilling, heartfelt experience that rewards patience. An enjoyable film that could have been even better with a leaner runtime.
I score The Gorge a generous 8 out of 10.
