Escape from the 21st Century

Preview by Jon Donnis

What if a sneeze could take you 20 years into the future, where nothing is as you dreamed it would be? Escape from the 21st Century turns this inventive concept into an emotional and thrilling adventure, weaving together themes of friendship, regret and redemption. Directed by Yang Li, the film tells the story of three teenage friends, Wang Zha, Chengyong and Pao Pao, whose lives change forever when they fall into a lake glowing with strange, vivid colours. Emerging from the water, they discover they can leap back and forth 20 years in time with a simple sneeze, but their extraordinary power reveals a future they would rather avoid.

In the future, Wang Zha becomes an investigative reporter uncovering the crimes of a ruthless mob boss, played by Wen Zhengrong. However, his quest for truth leads to the discovery that his friend Chengyong is entangled in the criminal empire. To complicate matters further, Pao Pao, who is struggling with his own insecurities, is now in a relationship with Chengyong's former girlfriend, Liu Lianzhi, played by Zhong Chuxi. Determined to right their lives and save the world, the trio return to the past and dedicate 20 years to training themselves into physical powerhouses. As they take on the mob boss and his empire, they must also face difficult choices, ultimately erasing their future selves to ensure their power cannot cause harm.

Starring Zhang Ruoyun as the courageous Wang Zha, Song Yang as the conflicted Chengyong and Li Chenhao as the impulsive yet loyal Pao Pao, the film is a visually striking and emotionally charged exploration of the bonds of friendship. With a cast that also features Wu Xiaoliang, Zhu Yanmanzi and Wen Zhengrong, Escape from the 21st Century is an unforgettable sci-fi adventure. The film will be available on Digital Platforms from 24 February and on Blu-ray from 24 March, distributed by Signature Entertainment.
