Prepare to immerse yourself in a stunning journey through one of China's most illustrious periods of history as Chang'an, a visually spectacular animated epic from the acclaimed Light Chaser Animation Studios, arrives in UK and Irish cinemas on 28th February. Directed by Xie Junwei and Zou Jing, this 3D animated historical drama brings to life the captivating world of the Tang Dynasty, focusing on the enduring friendship between two of China's most iconic poets, Li Bai and Gao Shi.
Chang'an captures the decades-long relationship between these two literary giants, set against the backdrop of the Tang dynasty's transition from its golden age of prosperity to the turmoil caused by the An Lushan rebellion. The film delves into the lives of Li Bai, known for his fiery passion and poetic brilliance, and Gao Shi, a poet, politician, and general, whose quiet strength and loyalty to his friend defined much of his life.
The cast of Chang'an features a talented group of actors, each bringing their characters to life with depth and authenticity. Yang Tianxiang portrays the young Gao Shi, while Wu Junquan takes on the role of the elderly Gao Shi. Ling Zhenhe and Xuan Xiaoming both play Li Bai, with Ling representing the poet in his youth and Xuan capturing his elder years. Liu Jiaoyu and Sun Lulu bring the early youth and youth of Du Fu to life, while Ya Jie and Ba He portray key historical figures like General Geshu Han and General Guo Ziyi. Xu Jiaqi voices Princess Yuzhen, while Jiang Qiuzai plays Wang Wei, a renowned musician, painter, and poet. Li Haojia rounds out the cast as the politician, writer, and calligrapher, Li Yong.
The story of Chang'an is as much about political intrigue and personal challenge as it is about poetry. As the friendship of Li Bai and Gao Shi is tested by the upheavals of their time, the film beautifully portrays the delicate balance of genius, ambition, and legacy.
