Sonic the Hedgehog 3

Review by Jon Donnis

"Sonic the Hedgehog 3" is a fun-filled action-adventure comedy that takes the beloved franchise to new heights, delivering an engaging and highly entertaining experience for fans and newcomers alike. Following the events of the previous films, Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles must band together to face a powerful new adversary, the mysterious Shadow. His overwhelming strength and complex motivations push the team to seek out an unexpected alliance in order to save the world.

The film opens with a gripping backstory, taking us to 1974, where Shadow is introduced as a weapon developed by the Guardian Units of Nations (G.U.N.). This origin tale, spanning decades, delves into Shadow's tragic past, which is integral to his thirst for vengeance in the present day. When he escapes a prison facility and begins wreaking havoc, Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles are tasked with stopping him, though they quickly realise their powers are no match for the new threat. The plot continues to evolve as the team uncovers hidden secrets and forms uneasy alliances, leading to a high-stakes final confrontation involving the devastating Eclipse Cannon. The stakes are high, and the emotional payoff is genuine, making it much more than just a typical action flick.

One of the standout features of the film is its visual spectacle. The action sequences are thrilling, with a series of explosive set-pieces that are expertly crafted and guaranteed to keep the audience on the edge of their seats. Whether it's the high-speed chases or the intense battles between Sonic and Shadow, the film delivers on every front when it comes to action. The animation, seamlessly blending with live-action elements, makes the world of Sonic feel alive and vibrant. The effects are polished, ensuring that the fantastical elements never seem out of place, and the fluid motion of the characters is a joy to watch.

The comedy, while geared towards a younger audience, is well executed. The quirky humour is consistent with the tone of the previous films, with numerous gags and light-hearted moments that will make both kids and adults laugh. Sonic's irreverent charm and Tails' nerdy optimism offer a perfect contrast to the more serious and brooding Shadow. Keanu Reeves, voicing Shadow, brings a unique gravitas to the character, while Jim Carrey rep
The emotional depth of the film is another strength. As Sonic and Shadow come to terms with their shared pain and losses, the story explores themes of redemptrises his role as the eccentric Dr. Robotnik. Carrey is as delightful as ever, stealing scenes with his manic energy and over-the-top antics. His performance continues to be one of the film's greatest assets, and it's clear that his portrayal of Robotnik has become iconic.

ion and forgiveness. Sonic's journey from a cocky hero to someone who learns the value of empathy is heartfelt and adds a layer of complexity that enriches the narrative. The dynamic between Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles has been well established, and their camaraderie provides a solid foundation for the film's emotional moments. The addition of Tom and Maddie, Sonic's adoptive parents, adds a sense of warmth, making the film feel more grounded amidst all the chaos.

However, the film does have its drawbacks. If you're not familiar with the previous two films or the Sonic video games, the plot can feel overwhelming. The film assumes a certain level of knowledge about the characters and their relationships, which may leave some viewers feeling lost, especially with the deeper backstory of Shadow. Fans of the games and those who have followed the series from the beginning will likely have a more fulfilling experience, while casual viewers may struggle to keep up with the lore.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is a rare sequel that manages to maintain the charm and excitement of its predecessors while adding new layers of emotional depth and intensity. The film delivers an action-packed adventure filled with memorable performances, stunning visuals, and an engaging story. The fact that this series has evolved so successfully, especially considering the early backlash over Sonic's original design, is a testament to the dedication of the filmmakers. Sonic fans have much to celebrate, as this third installment proves that the franchise is in good hands. For those who have followed Sonic's journey on the big screen, it's clear that "Sonic the Hedgehog 3" is a worthy addition to the series. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would score it a near-perfect 9.5 out of 10.
