REVIEW: The Retirement Plan (2023) - Starring Nicolas Cage

Review By Jon Donnis
Director and writer Tim Brown delivers a punchy 2023 American crime thriller, "The Retirement Plan," featuring a stellar cast and a plot that keeps you at the edge of your seat. The film scores a solid 7 out of 10 for its intense action sequences, Nicolas Cage's charismatic performance, and the underlying theme of family bonds and redemption.

The story follows Ashley (Ashley Greene) and her young daughter Sarah (Thalia Campbell), caught in a perilous criminal conspiracy. Seeking refuge and aid, Ashley turns to her estranged father, Matt (Nicolas Cage), a retired government assassin known as "the sneak." The film kicks off with an air of mystery surrounding Cage's character, seamlessly transitioning from the sunny Cayman Islands to the gritty world of crime.

One of the film's standout qualities is the abundance of adrenaline-pumping action scenes that leave the audience thoroughly entertained. Nicolas Cage's portrayal of Matt is a highlight, as he strikes the right balance between lethal seriousness and a playful spirit, demonstrating his seasoned acting prowess. It's evident that Cage enjoys embodying the role, adding a layer of enjoyment to the viewing experience.

"The Retirement Plan" isn't just about action; it carries a deeper message about truth, forgiveness, and the pursuit of a peaceful life. The narrative sheds light on the unexpected complexities of familial relationships and the transformative power of confronting one's past. This theme adds depth to an otherwise action-packed storyline.

However, the film does have its drawbacks. Excessive profanity might detract from the overall viewing experience for some, and the level of violence, although fitting for the genre, might surprise those expecting a lighter, more comedic thriller. The tonal shift towards a more serious and violent narrative might not align with initial expectations, impacting the overall enjoyment for some viewers.

In conclusion, "The Retirement Plan" is an engaging crime thriller with exciting action, a charismatic performance by Nicolas Cage, and a compelling exploration of family dynamics and redemption. While it's not without its flaws, the film succeeds in delivering an adrenaline-fueled viewing experience and a thought-provoking message. It's definitely worth a watch, earning a solid 7 out of 10 for its entertainment value and narrative depth.
