REVIEW: The Equalizer 3 (2023) - Starring Denzel Washington

Review by Jon Donnis
"The Equalizer 3" delivers exactly what fans of the franchise have come to expect - a powerhouse performance by Denzel Washington, gripping action sequences, and a relentless pursuit of justice. While it may not break new ground in terms of storytelling, it stays true to its roots and offers a satisfying conclusion to the trilogy.

Denzel Washington reprises his role as Robert McCall, and once again, he dominates the screen with his commanding presence. McCall is a character who is both intimidating and endearing, and Washington's performance effortlessly balances these qualities. He is a force to be reckoned with, taking on the Sicilian Mafia with a vengeance that's almost cartoonish in its intensity.

"Finding himself surprisingly at home in Southern Italy, he discovers his new friends are under the control of local crime bosses. As events turn deadly, McCall knows what he has to do: become his friends' protector by taking on the mafia."

The action scenes are a highlight of the film, as McCall takes on his adversaries with brutal efficiency. Director Antoine Fuqua knows how to stage thrilling action, and he doesn't disappoint here. The audience is treated to a spectacle of violence as McCall dishes out his own brand of justice.

What sets "The Equalizer 3" apart is Denzel Washington's ability to bring depth to his character. McCall is not just a one-dimensional vigilante; he's a complex individual with a strong moral code, and Washington's portrayal captures this complexity beautifully. This film showcases Washington's versatility as both a dramatic actor and an action star.

The film does suffer from a somewhat formulaic story, but it manages to overcome this drawback with its intense action sequences and Washington's charismatic performance. It's clear that this instalment is aimed at fans who have been following McCall's journey from the beginning. If you weren't already a fan of the franchise, "The Equalizer 3" may not win you over though.

The supporting cast, including Dakota Fanning, Eugenio Mastrandrea, and Sonia Ben Ammar, all deliver solid performances that complement Washington's lead role. The Sicilian Mafia setting adds a new layer of intrigue to the story and sets the stage for an epic showdown.

In summary, "The Equalizer 3" may not reinvent the wheel, but it doesn't need to. It offers what fans have come to love about the franchise - Denzel Washington's magnetic performance, intense action, and a quest for justice. If you've been following Robert McCall's journey, this final instalment is a satisfying conclusion that deserves a strong 8 out of 10.
